Meet James Rodriguez

Hey there, fellow grill enthusiasts! I’m James Rodriguez, and I’ve spent the last 15 years turning my passion for outdoor cooking into a lifelong pursuit of barbecue perfection. I’m a certified Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) judge, a competition pitmaster, and the proud owner of Rodriguez BBQ Catering based right here in Austin, Texas.

My BBQ Journey

My love affair with barbecue started the way it does for most folks — standing next to my father at a beat-up kettle grill on summer weekends in San Antonio. But what began as a family tradition turned into an obsession when I entered my first KCBS competition in 2011 and walked away with a 3rd-place finish in brisket. That ribbon hooked me. Over the next decade, I competed in 50+ events across the Southwest, earned my KCBS judging certification, and built a regional catering business that’s served thousands of satisfied customers.

Along the way, I’ve tested, broken, rebuilt, and reviewed hundreds of grills, smokers, thermometers, and accessories. Every lesson learned the hard way — the stuck dampers, the temperature spikes, the flare-ups that ruined a beautiful brisket — became insight I now share with you.

What We Cover

At BBQ & Grilling Tips, we dive deep into:

  • BBQ Grills: Charcoal, gas, pellet, and kamado — we test them all head-to-head
  • Smokers: From offset rigs to electric cabinet smokers, reviewed by a competition pitmaster
  • Grilling Accessories: The tools, gloves, baskets, and gadgets that actually make a difference
  • Sauces, Rubs & Marinades: Store-bought and homemade, tested on every meat from brisket to salmon
  • Grilling Techniques: Direct heat, indirect cooking, two-zone setups, and low-and-slow mastery
  • Outdoor Kitchen Setup: Build your dream backyard cooking station the right way

Our Review Process

Every product we recommend goes through a structured 5-step evaluation:

  1. Unboxing & Assembly: We document how easy (or frustrating) it is to get the product ready for its first cook
  2. First Cook: A standard test cook — burgers, chicken, and vegetables — to establish baseline performance
  3. Extended Testing: At least 30 days of regular use, including low-and-slow smokes, high-heat sears, and cleanup after each session
  4. Durability Check: We assess build quality, rust resistance, and wear after extended use in real outdoor conditions — including the unpredictable Texas weather
  5. Value Assessment: We weigh the product’s performance, durability, and features against its price tag to determine if it’s genuinely worth your money

Why Trust Us

I personally test every single product we recommend. No shortcuts, no sponsored bias, no parroting manufacturer claims. If a grill can’t hold 225°F for 8 hours straight, I’ll tell you. If a thermometer is off by 15 degrees out of the box, I’ll document it. My reputation as a KCBS judge and competition pitmaster depends on honest, experience-based evaluations.

Editorial Independence

BBQ & Grilling Tips operates with complete editorial independence. Our participation in the Amazon Associates program helps fund our testing, but it never influences our reviews or rankings. We recommend products based solely on performance, durability, and value — regardless of commission rates. If I wouldn’t use it in my own backyard, it doesn’t make it onto this site.
